About
Together with a brave client we set an ambitious goal: let's built the first bamboo pavilion in Uganda.
Bamboo was available; we had a strong team on site and eager architects were making a design to explore the capacities of this beautiful local material. From harvesting poles, to creating a treatment facility up to building a mockup in town within a month, we did it. It was a steep learning curve, but it gave us all the energy to be sure that this was the beginning of a new road.
The pavilion is made out of three parasols that come together in a big roof. Three reciprocal towers are surrounded by heat bended bamboo poles, that support the upper roof ring strongly.
The bamboo is lifted from the ground by a concrete foot that acts as the seating for the students.
The center of the roof leaves a circle open to bring in light and rain for a future garden in the middle of the pavilion.
The big pavilion has eight smaller siblings, existing of one tower, spread over the campus.
The wood carpenters that made every single one of them, were amazed about this new material they could work with. They adapted their mindset quickly.
Beforehand they were taught the skills of treating, building and maintaining bamboo through a series of tests and a mock up. From now on we will have our team of bamboo builders waiting for you!
