About
In the heart of central Africa, in the country of Uganda, lays Bwindi Impenetrable Forest. A breathtaking primeval forest full of live.
A vibrant community lives around it, working in the fields of tea and introducing visitors to gorilla families. Originally the Batwa people, one of the local tribes, used to live within the forest. Although their traditions are based on a life in the forest, they are not allowed in anymore. Asilia Africa works together with 'Change a Life' foundation to regrow a forest around the borders of the UNESCO heritage, where the Batwa can be live again in their natural habitat.
45 hectares of land, boarding the primary forest, are undertaken by Asilia Africa. Reforestation has already begun with planting many small trees and taking out tea shrubs. Together with Pablo Luna Studio and Asilia we have been cocreating the vision for an eco-lodge on the site.
Two inspiring site visits has lead to a beautiful design based on local materials.
Within the lodge and on the neighboring land the Batwa are part of the community. They will have the freedom to embrace their traditional way of life in the regrowing forest while also having opportunities to engage with contemporary lifestyles and practices.
The construction of the lodge will be led by Studio Akeka and Kwafundi.
The main structure of the buildings will be made of wood, with an elegant curvy bamboo roof covering it all. A new level of building with bamboo in Uganda.
On site workshops will teach local craftsman how to build with bamboo. This knowledge will be shared by Vinc Math. The eco-lodge will be made with Ugandan grown materials.
